Labradorite vs Spectrolite
Labradorite and Spectrolite are both members of the feldspar mineral family. They are well known for a colourful optical effect called labradorescence. This is the rainbow-like flash that appears when the stone catches the light. Although they share the same basic mineral makeup, they are not the same. There are clear differences in colour, quality and where they are found.
What is Labradorite
Labradorite is a naturally occurring feldspar mineral. It usually has a grey, green or dark base colour. The flash can be blue, green or yellow. Labradorite can show a large flash across the surface or small patches of colour.
It was first discovered in Labrador, Canada in the late 1700s. Today, most gem quality labradorite on the market comes from:
- Madagascar
- Canada
- Russia
- India
Labradorite has become very popular in jewellery and home decor pieces because of its magical shifting colours.
What is Spectrolite
Spectrolite is the highest grade of labradorite. The name Spectrolite is only given to stones that meet strict quality standards. Spectrolite always shows a strong flash with a full spectrum of colours. Blue, green, yellow, orange, red and even violet can appear at once.
Spectrolite was discovered in Finland during the 1940s. It is only found in Finland. If a stone is sold as Spectrolite from another country, it is not true Spectrolite.
Because of its rarity and intense colour play, Spectrolite is more valuable than standard labradorite.
How to Tell Them Apart
- Look at the richness of the colours
- Labradorite usually shows fewer colours while Spectrolite has many at once.
- Check the base colour
- Spectrolite is darker which helps the colours shine brighter.
- Ask the seller where the stone was mined
Only Finland produces true Spectrolite.
A reputable seller should always be clear about the stone’s origin.
Why This Matters For Buyers
Understanding the difference helps you choose the right stone for your collection. If you love bold flashes and rare material, Spectrolite is a special investment. If you want something beautiful and more affordable, Labradorite is an excellent choice.
